Check out the good work going on in Coach Rhodes's class! We did our walk lesson today which is an argumentative article about how awe walks make people happier. The article explains how 2 groups were asked to take a 15 minute walk each day, but one group was told to have a childlike wonder to the environment around them as they take the walk. The study showed the in “awe” group were much happier than the other group. I had the students assess their mood/well-being before the walk with claim and reason statements. They had to re-assess themselves when we got back from the walk with a new claim and reasons to support the claim on why their mood improved or regressed. So far every student said they were in a better mood after the walk.

Today in 7th grade ELA, students had class debates as part of their argumentative unit. Students worked in teams to develop an argument over a given topic then presented it to a jury of their peers. The importance of addressing and rebutting the opposing arguments was evident throughout the debates.

The Leader in Me language is starting to seep into the culture at LCMS. Students have talked about fixed mindsets vs. growth mindsets during character ed, and one of our 6th graders used that great vocabulary when writing in her ELA class about some literature she had read. We're excited about the potential of this framework to help our students become their best selves!

It's Random Acts of Kindness Week! Today we watched this video about showing empathy to those with less than us or who are being bullied. This skill is so important and can help change the culture, simply supporting others who are going through a tough time is one of the best ways to demonstrate kindness.
