NEW INFORMATION: Solar Eclipse – August 21, 2017
We have revised our plan for the solar eclipse. We will not have school sponsored field trips to view the eclipse. We have concerns with the unknown aspects of traffic and the volume of visitors to the north Georgia area. We feel that school field trips may not be the safest opportunity for students to experience the event and that it is best for students to experience this event with their families.
What are we doing?
1)     Providing professional learning to staff about the what, why, and when the event is expected.
2)   Having teachers provide instruction and incorporating aspects of the eclipse in lesson plans.
3)    Buying eclipse glasses for all students. Glasses
will be distributed on Friday, August 18, 2017.
4)   Releasing all students at 11:30 on August 21, 2017.
5)    Excusing the absences of students who miss school on August 21, 2017 so they can travel with their family for optimal viewing. Parents should send a note to the school indicating this as the reason for absence.

* Students must be present at school until 10:00 to
be counted present for the day.

BES Odyssey of the Mind
BES Odyssey of the Mind
Congratulations to the BES Odyssey of the Mind teams that competed at the Regional Tournament on March 4th in Flowery Branch, GA. Blackburn had 3 teams, with 7 students on each team, and they all worked diligently for several months to come up with a creative solution to their problems. One team from BES is headed to Columbus State University in Columbus, GA for the State Finals Tournament on April 1st. Please join us in wishing them good luck as they compete with teams from all over the state!

Charter and PFO combined to bring Professor STEM to BES. Students experienced a show based on science concepts.
Important Information about Breakfast
In order to have more students be able to enjoy a school breakfast, starting January 17, we will begin serving breakfast at two different times. Grades 3-5 will eat from 7:30-7:50 and K-2 will eat from 7:50 – 8:10. It is our plan that breakfast will be served quicker and more children will join us for breakfast. Tardy time will still be 8:00.

Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s):

The Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) of 1965 requires that parents or guardians who have children attending a Title I school be notified of how well their school is preparing its students for college and/or a career, as well as the school’s designation under Georgia’s ESEA Flexibility Waiver.

Under the 2015 renewal of Georgia’s ESEA Flexibility Waiver, certain Title I schools continue to be designated as Reward, Priority, or Focus Schools.  The Waiver allows the use of the College and Career Ready Performance Index (CCRPI) as the comprehensive report card for all schools in Georgia, providing a score between 0-100 for each school—measuring how well the school is doing in preparing its students to be successful in college and/or a career.

2015 CCRPI scores have not been reported as of this time. Once those scores have been published, all parents will be notified. Our 2014 score was 87.8.

I am very proud to tell you that Blackburn Elementary School has been designated as a High Progress Reward School based on our performance over the past three school years! This is a very big recognition, and we are excited for our school.

At Blackburn Elementary School, we take pride in the teaching we provide for our children. Our teachers and staff members work very hard to meet the needs of all students to ensure they achieve at their highest potential. This recognition shows that students are learning and making good progress.

An important part of BES’s success is parent participation and support in developing activities to improve student achievement.  We hope that you will become involved in our school improvement work as we continue to monitor student achievement and set high expectations.  If you are interested in participating in the development of our school improvement plans, being a part of our family engagement team or have questions about how you can better help your child in school, please contact me at (706)-864-8180 or at

Thank you for all that you do to support your child’s education.

SchoolBlocks offers a unique and powerful personalized search system. A member of the public, searching for "homework" might see an announcement from the school as the first result. However, if the user is logged in, they would see their teacher’s latest homework assignment as the top result.
